 VAR In LaLiga The  Video Assistant Referee system, known as VAR,  has been used in LaLiga since the 2018/2019 season, but there are still doubts as to when it can be used and how it can be used. When can VAR intervene in LaLiga? The Video Assistant Referee can only assist the match referee where there is either a  ‘clear and obvious error’ or ‘serious missed incident’  in relation to one of the four following situations: Goal/No Goal: This is the same GDS (Goal Decision System) as seen previously in the premier league post. Penalty/No Penalty: This is where LaLiga Tends to differ from Premier League. LaLiga is far more liberal with giving penalties to Teams.   What is VAR VAR or Video Assisted Referee is a system used by many competitive league around the world to enforce rules such as offside and to give the on-field referee more angles of fouls to allow for a more proper decision involving multiple parties to be made.  VAR is a part of the decision making process in almost every major league. Many decisions which were influenced by VAR have been controversial, with a new scandal every week it feels like the systems has to have some major flaws. Many see it as a necessary evil with a poll from 2020 revealing that the premier league community were almost entirely split on whether or not to keep the system.   VAR In the Premier League (England) The Premier League (Formerly The Barclays League) is the top flight English competition, allowing teams from anywhere in England to compete at the highest level. Many consider this to be the most competitive top flight league in the world, this is because of the volatility of the league, it feels as though its rarely a one horse race at the start of a season. The EPL (English Premier League) has hosted some of the greatest talents and teams in the world. VAR in the EPL is one of the most consistently controversial forms of the technology. VAR is limited to 4 categories for the EPL, these are: Possible Red Card, Possible Penalties, Goal Decisions and Mistaken Identity.
