What Is VAR?

What is VAR

VAR or Video Assisted Referee is a system used by many competitive league around the world to enforce rules such as offside and to give the on-field referee more angles of fouls to allow for a more proper decision involving multiple parties to be made.

VAR is a part of the decision making process in almost every major league. Many decisions which were influenced by VAR have been controversial, with a new scandal every week it feels like the systems has to have some major flaws. Many see it as a necessary evil with a poll from 2020 revealing that the premier league community were almost entirely split on whether or not to keep the system. Many people believe that VAR "takes away the magic" of the game believing firmly in the ideology of "Sh*thouse", which is belief that there should be some leniency with refereeing with decisions that are slightly blurry or unclear. the introduction of VAR has also allowed for some drastic changes to Injury Time because of the time it takes to review decisions.

In this blog we will discuss the variations in VAR between competitions and cover some pro's and con's of the differences in VAR style.
